SEO is Dead – Long live SEM

When google started introducing maps they were half way down the results pages for a low percentage of search phrases – now maps appear right at the top for an increasing ammount of phrases.

Google products search results in the SERPs were as rare as hens teeth – Now we are seeing them far more frequently (sometimes at the top)

Video results in the Serps were few and far between – they are now becoming more frequent

Google news in the SERPs, maybe if it was a really big news story – now becoming more frequent

Google image search results – as above

It’s started a new game for me,

Find the search phrase that puts the most alternative google search types in the Serps

The ultimate goal is to find a search phrase that displays all the following on the same page;

3 Adwords results (at top of page)

8 google maps results

3 google products results

4 google image results

2 google video results

3 google news results

Oh, and almost forgot, 10 organic search results

Perhaps that is why I say,

SEO is Dead, Long live SEM

Google Maps Set Up Walkthrough Service

Q: What is the Google Maps set up walk-through service?
A: The Google Maps set up walk through service is a basic service which we provide to small business owners who are not really confident enough to set up their own Google Maps listing, or for those who feel it is important that their listings are set up correctly in the first place.

Q: How is the google maps set up service provided?
A: We provide two options with the walk-through set up;

  • Telephone
  • MSN Messenger

Q: Do I need a Google Account to set up a maps listing?
A: We can, with the business owners permission, set your listing up for you, but we strongly recommend that you sign up to a Google Account and set up your listing in your own name.

Q: Do I have to pay for a Google Account?
A: No, Google accounts are completely free and we strongly recommend that all small business owners or website owners open one.

Q: Do you need access to my Google Account to set up my listing?
A: No, the whole purpose of the walkthrough is that you set up your own listing and have full control, we are merely here to guide you through the process one step at a time ensuring that your listing is set up as effectively as possible.

Q: What is the process to set up my listing?
A: You initially provide us with your Business name, full address, website address, category of your business, and a brief description of your business and products/services supplied. You are then allocated a 15 minute time slot in which we will walkthrough the set up process with you and help you set up your listing.

Q: Can I choose when to take my allocated time slot?
A: Yes, this can be agreed between us via email prior to booking a time slot.

Q: What do I need to do for my allocated time slot?
A: You have to be sat in front of your PC, have access to the Internet, and access to a telephone. Preferably you should be signed in to MSN messenger, having already provided us with your contact details, If you don’t like Messenger the service can be provided over the telephone.

Q: How long will it take for my Google Maps listing to be accepted?
A: We cannot guarantee your google maps listing will be automatically accepted, but from our experience most listings are accepted within 24hours,

Q: Can I add multiple Google Maps listing?
A: Google have strict guidelines about multiple submissions, you can do this, but only if you have separate branches of your business in different locations throughout the country, please ask for further information.

Q: Why should I use your service when it is free to set up a Google Maps listing?
A: Why do you use a mechanic to service your car? Why do you use a bookkeeper to look after your accounts? Why do you use a webmaster to update your website? Like all of these things Setting up a Maps listing can be done by yourself, but why risk messing up when our maps experts can do it for you?

Q: OK, I’m interested in setting up a listing, what’s next?

Optimising Google Maps Listings

Adding a Business to Google Maps is Free!

You may not know this, but adding a listing to google maps is 100% Free, remember this if approached by anyone to set your listing up for an extortionate fee.

Visit Google Maps Optimisation to find out more.

As with Search Engine Optimisation, there are 3 ways of optimising for google maps

  • White Hat Google Maps Optimisation
  • Grey Hat Google Maps Optimisation
  • Black Hat Google Maps Optimisation

It is completely up to you which you choose but we don’t recommend grey hat or black hat if you hope to maintain permanent listings and are not prepared to lose your google account.

White hat google maps optimising means following the guidelines, following the instructions and being very clear about what you are doing.

Grey hat google maps optimising is often done by people looking for quick results or people who don’t really care to much about their websites. It is often touted by third parties who charge to set listings up for people, achieve very good results, but who are effectively gambling with other peoples livelihoods.

Black hat should always be avoided. it usually consists of unscrupolous SEO companies using other people accounts to set up listings, they may ask for your details to set up your listing, retain your log in details and in the future use your accounts to set up multiple spam listings.

My word of advice if you have given someone your details to set up a listing is to change your password, change the email address and user name associated with your account and keep a close eye on things.

If you would like us to help with ethical white hat google maps optimisation please feel free to contact us on 01608 685039 or info@mapsoptimisation.co.uk for further information.
